Usually when speaking of high low we are speaking of fashion. Well I'm not a fashionista. So my high low mixture is food! Yes food.
Below is a picture of our dinner tonight. Steak with generic Trader Joes steak sauce. Salad with Hidden Valley Ranch. There really is no other ranch on the planet. Potato with generic Food Lion sour cream and Country Crock spread. Then generic Food Lion garlic toast.
See a mixture of high and low and totally delicious. Much cheaper than any restaurant.
Are there any food items that you have to have the name brand? Oh I forgot there is shredded Sargento 4 state cheese on the salad!
Tomorrow should be very interesting. We are going to a family reunion on my husband's side. Interesting fact I've not met these family members and we've been married almost 32 years. Needless to say I will be nervous. It's like meeting the family all over again!!
We are bringing red velvet whoopie cookies, chocolate chess pie and barbeque. The sweets are homemade or at least a box mix and the bbq will be purchased. Pork bbq is DELICIOUS. Can I get an amen? If you've never eaten it please give it a try. There is a debate in North Carolina. Western vs Eastern style. One is a thicker ketchup based and the other is a vinegar base. I like both. I grew up with the western style but now I live in the eastern style.
So the only extra cost will be gas. It's about 2 1/2 hours away and of course the BBQ. I'm really trying to buckle down and keep costs down so we can save more money while also paying down debt. But I want us to be generous and hospitable as well.
What if you or your spouse lost their job? What if the economy tanks? What if the only job you could find is with a company you really dislike and the salary is half of what you used to make?
What is the first to go? For us, cable right off of the bat. Then lower the cell phone bill. Then hit up the grocery budget.
Life would consist of spending money only on essentials and those are food and shelter. I know there is a third but for the life of me I can't think of it right now.
I am continuing to put extra money to our debt. In fact, I paid an extra $300.00 towards it today! YAH!!!! I will continue to pay extra to get it out of our lives HOWEVER I am not putting every available cent towards it. I am also putting into various savings accounts. I know the interest I get for the savings accounts is woeful but I want, no I need a larger cushion.
So what do you do? Let's also say that your grocery bill has to be cut drastically. You now have only half of what you used to have to spend. What do you do? I really don't coupon but we do buy a lot of generic items. I guess the old saying of shop the perimeter of the store will play a more important role. But here's an example. Say you want lasagna for dinner. You can buy a Stouffer's lasagna, family sized, for about $8.99 in my area. Buying all of the ingredients to make it from scratch costs more than that. What would you do?
Oh well just something to think about on a Friday night!
Why is it that you save for months to spend a few days at the beach and POOF it's just over? Kind of anti climatic. Especially for someone like myself who'd rather not work full time. But I digress. It was really nice. The nicest place we've ever stayed at when vacationing at the beach. It's a resort with a gated community. Several pools and it's almost like having a private beach. Plus we got an amazing deal. If you stayed 3 nights in June you got 40% off their normal rate. It was so quiet. So relaxing. I'm not much of a beach person. Truth be told I'd rather be in a cooler locale like the mountains but I have to admit it was nice.
I was able to save up enough to pay for the trip totally. We did have to put the room on our credit card but I just got back from the bank. Paid. In. Full. Ka Ching. Now I will back track one annoying thing about the resort they refused to take cash when reserving an umbrella at the beach and cabana at the pool so we had to charge those as well. But like I said paid in full.
Do any of you use debit cards when making reservations? If so have you experienced any problems? It amazes me that businesses don't want cash. Same thing at Christmas. Cashiers look at me like I'm an alien when I pull out cash instead of a credit card.
So it's been a bit of a break since I last posted. Really we've not done much of anything except go to work, come home, go to bed, get up the next day and start all over again.
We are getting our debt down down down!! One of the items can be paid off by the end of December IF we put the pedal to the medal so to speak. I was talking to dh the other day and told him after we get back from vacation I'd really like to buckle down and get these debts out of the way. Oh how I look forward to the day they are gone. I really admire these young people on Youtube and other financial blogs that are taking control of their finances at an early age. I wish I had done that as well. But that is water under the bridge.
Do y'all have any vacation plans? We are going to south of Myrtle Beach. I'm not a huge beach person but dh is. He loves it there. Me? I'm more of a mountain, cool air type of person. Plus the beaches here in NC and SC are just overrun with people in the summer. It seems like the entire northern and Midwestern parts of the US are down here during that time. Tons of folks from Ohio, West Virginia, New Jersey, New York, Maryland etc...................I can only assume that the prices are better down here and the water warmer! LOL
Like I said once we get back from vacation, then I want to turbo charge it to being free! Vacation is already saved and paid for. Thanks be to God for that. We will put the cottage room on the credit card but I have the dinero to pay it off immediately, plus funds to pay for the rest of it.
My husband did say that he's a simple man. All he wants is a week at the beach and season tickets to see Appalachian State Football. The beach is paid for as well as the season tickets!
So after that, we should be ready to do this.
BTW-we got new furniture, just a couch and chair. We did charge those but the card is paid off.
So that is what is going on with us in a very brief nutshell.
