Do You Love Your Job?

Do you look forward to going to work?  These are questions that have been banging in my mind for some time now.  Honestly I don't love my job nor do I look forward to going to work.  I don't hate my job either.  I am treated and paid well-can't complain about that.  I just wonder if this is what I am supposed to be doing? Is there something else out there?  Sometimes the grass is not greener on the other side.  Been there done that and still have the scars.

If I could I would love to stay home and work part time.  I've really been intrigue with homesteading blogs.  Don't get me wrong, I don't see us moving to the country anytime soon but I admire those who do live this way.  Some of them are their own bosses while others still work outside of their homes.

If you could stay home, would you?  Does homesteading sound remotely interesting to you?  If not, what does?

Oh My the Money is Getting Very Very Tight

I have $40.00 to last until pay day which is Thursday.  I have to go to Kroger and get the hubster some items.  I've switched to his car because it has the most gas in it.  There is enough in his car to get me through.  This whole thing is making me think about a very very basic grocery haul.

What is the minimum amount you could use to get you through in a crunch AND what would you buy?

I think the very basic for us would be $50.00.  For me to go lower I would have to become much better skilled at making food go a l o n g w a y!!

Easter Lunch

Happy Easter ya'll!  He is Risen!

Today's lunch was ham with green bean casserole and a potato casserole. Add some Sister Schubert's rolls and deviled eggs and voila!  A tasty meal. Obviously the ham was the most expensive part.

I'm not the greatest cook but am improving, I think!

What did you have for lunch?

In the Kitchen

Since the hubster had his surgery I've been cooking a lot more. Like breakfast lunch and dinner more. And I'm not talking about cold cereal.

Tonight I made baked spaghetti and if I say so myself it was really good. It was a bit time consuming. I would not recommend making it during the week. I also made a cake. Now before anyone thinks I got all Betty Crocker the cake came from a mix. But still I'm happy with it!!

Frugality And Peace

Now to start off I want to say that true peace comes only from God. Saving money can also give one a sense of calm. For example if the hubster had this surgery just last year I would have been in a state of panic. How would we pay for it?  I would have had many stressful moments. Now I can pay for all of the expenses. Yes the money will come out of the EF but I will work harder to build it back up.

I'm sitting here waiting for them to come get him. It's nice to not have to stress over money.

It Pays to be Prepared

So tomorrow the hubster is having his surgery.  We took his prescriptions to the pharmacy yesterday so we'd be ready. Wouldn't you know it the power was out when I went to pay for them. And it won't be back on until midnight. Maybe. He needs his pain medication. So the pharmacist is going to call me at 8 tomorrow morning to give an update. I sure hope everything is fine then. Or I will need pain meds too.

We should've had this taken care of earlier. Being prepared isn't always about saving money. It can also be about peace of mind. Right now I could use that.

Taxes

Good grief I hate filing taxes. How can something so simple be so difficult? There has got to be a better way.

On another note my husband is driving me crazy with his surgery and it hasn't happened yet. Oh give me patience.

Lazy Saturday

Today has been much cooler than the last week. I'm so thankful for the weekend. One day I will be able to retire and then every day is a Saturday!  Lol.

I went to the farmers market again for eggs and this time I got some blue ones too!!  I love blue eggs.

I admit I went to Walmart and a few items from the Pioneer Woman line. I'm trying to give the kitchen a bit of color and just make it more cheerful.

What was your Saturday like?  Tomorrow we are expecting rain and temperatures in the 50's. Not fun but it is what it is.

Wait for the Facts

This is not remotely about frugal living.  Tonight on ESPN was their 30 for 30 documentary.  It was about the Duke Lacrosse case.  Living in Wake County we heard, lived and breathed this case for over a year.  It was constantly on tv, the radio.  Everywhere.

For those who don't know-the team had a party one night and paid 2 strippers to come to the house.  From there things went downhill.  One of the ladies claimed to have been sexually assaulted.  Immediately the press and news stations practically declared the players guilty.  I have to admit that I thought they were guilty too because of what I was reading and seeing on the media.  It seems that everyone turned against the team except their families.  The young men and their families went through hell.  The coach lost his job.

Well turns out that none of the DNA that was present on the victim was from any of the players.  The DNA was from other men.  This information was withheld from the reports that were submitted.  One of the defense lawyers immersed himself in learning all he could regarding DNA.  So when the prosecution presented their private expert he knew what to ask.  From watching the film clips of the cross examination you could tell the expert was clearly surprised that the attorney knew as much as he did.  This private expert admitted that the Durham Co prosecutor had agreed to withhold vital DNA evidence evidence.  From that point on the case against the team was lost.

This is just a brief synopsis.  So many people had their lives turned upside down from this case.  The so called "victim"?  She is serving time for 2nd degree murder for the death of her boyfriend.  The Durham Co prosecutor was disbarred and had to serve one day in prison for contempt.  One of the police officers  involved with the case resigned from the force and then later on committed suicide.  The three players were declared innocent by the State of North Carolina and now help with the Innocence Project.

You know we all make dumb decisions in life.  Having strippers to a party was a stupid decision and almost cost 3 young men their adult lives to be served in prison.

Now I try to wait until the facts are collected.  It is so easy to come to a conclusion watching the news.  This case taught a lot of people to not jump to conclusions until we know the facts.  These men had families that were wealthy.  They had the resources to hire attorneys.  But what about those folks who don't have that?  Gives you something to think about.

Short Snipits of the Parade Today

Please excuse the quality.  All of my pics and videos on my blog are taken with my phone!

St. Patrick's Celebration

As I mentioned earlier the hubster loves this day where green is in and leprechauns run around. Today we went to downtown Raleigh to see the parade. After that we mosied over to O'Malley's Pub for lunch then Edible Art for dessert. Not frugal but it was way fun. I hope you enjoy the pics.

I'm in a Fashion Quandry

I'm in desperate need of clothes. Work clothes mostly.  It's very hard to find clothes when you are plus sized. Thrift stores are not exactly filled with nice plus sizes. I don't like big boxy moo moos but I don't want to dress like a teenager. Can't designers make AFFORDABLE cute plus size clothes?  I just saw a really pretty dress in Lane Bryant. $119!!  Can't swing that. It's very disappointing.

I Need Some Frugal Ideas For a Get Together

Once it gets warm and stays warm, which will be any day now here in North Carolina, I want to have some folks over for burgers.   It's not going to a grand event by any means but I kind of want some different appetizers.  I'm kind of tired of chips and dip.  Nothing wrong with those but I just want different.  I've been reading thriftymominboise.blogspot.com for a few weeks now.  If you haven't heard of her, go over and check her out.  It's really fun to read.  Makes we want to visit Idaho!
Well anyhoo...................she posted a cream cheese, seafood sauce and shrimp appetizer.  It looks really good.

Do you have any appetizer ideas that are cute, quick and rather cheap?

St Patrick's Day Celebration on Saturday

So the hubster is of Scottish descent but he loves St. Patrick's Day.  I think it's his favorite "holiday".
One year he sent green carnations to me at work and my coworkers were like why did he do that?  I said because he loves St Patrick's Day and he loves me!

Raleigh has a nice parade.  Each year gets a bit larger although they have discussed stopping it due to the costs involved.  I hope they keep it!  I love to see the Irish Wolfhounds.  They are so majestic and sweet at the same time. Then of course, we have to sip a bit of green beer-and if we can find an Irish pub that isn't packed to the gills, eat lunch.  He looks forward to this day all year.  He's like a kid about it.

I'm trying to decide what amount I should use to cover the expenses for this festivity.  They now charge to park in downtown Raleigh so that will run anywheres from $5-$8.  Green beers typically cost around $5 a piece-maybe more.  And lunch will be expensive.

Do you have any plans for this year?

It won't be a frugal day for us, that's for sure!

Last Night's Shepherd's Pie

I totally forgot to post this last night. DUH!!  The hubster cooked shepherd's pie. It doesn't look tasty. For some reason it looks greasy but trust me it tasted yummy!!  Months ago we got a great deal on one pound packages of ground turkey. This may be the last of those!  Sorry to see that deal disappear.

Good Deal on Chicken

I wish I took a picture but.........Kroger has boneless, skinless chicken breasts on sale for $1.99 a pound so I bought 4 packs of that.  Trying to stock up a tad because the hubster's surgery is back on for March 23rd.  I will have my hands full for quite some time.

For the most part we are really pleased with the prices at Kroger.  They stopped double coupons right after the extreme coupon show started so that's kind of a bummer but we buy a ton of Kroger generic products so we don't miss them all that much.  Plus Kroger is great about sending us coupons for their generic products.  We buy their peanut butter, granola bars (can convince the hubster to try homemade), sandwich meat and so many other items.  In our town we don't have a ton of stores to choose from.  Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Lowe's and Kroger.  There is also a Walmart and Target.  Oh lest I forget we do have an Aldi.  Now I like Aldi but the hubster not so much.

I saved over $20.00 tonight just using my Kroger card.  Did I really save it or is it I didn't spend the extra $20.00?  I think to be able to save I saved it I should transfer $20 into savings.  What is your definition of savings?

Saving for Future Costs

This type of savings is not included in the emergency fund.  Oh I guess you could do that but I think it is easier to have a separate account set up for those bills that are due yearly.  Take for example our termite protection plan aka Terminix.  The county in which we reside is one the worst for termite damage.  UGH!!!  So we always kept the plan.  For years I paid quarterly then about 2 years ago I realized that if I paid for the year I could save 10%.  That added up to be $32.  So I paid the year upfront.  Well then last year they stopped having the quarterly plan so now I am putting a set amount aside each month and will have it fully funded when it rolls around again in August.

I have a vacation fund set up similarly.  I put an amount in each pay period and that way we can at least spend a few days at the beach, or Amish country or sometimes in Williamsburg.

Just a week or so past I set up two more accounts:  one for car repairs and the other I am still trying to figure that one out.

Do you lump all of your savings in one account or have separates ones like we do?

Not Your Typical Political Rant

Folks I am getting a bit annoyed, no just down right mad at the absolute disregard for humanity on Facebook and other social media.

Even if you hated the Reagan family, someone died.  DIED people.  Someone lost their MOTHER.  For the love of all that is holy please just let it go.  Skip over the posts but no I've read some pretty rude and crude comments.  Such a sad state.

There are many people I totally disagree with but I would not post such vile hateful  remarks upon hearing of their death.

Sad sad sad.  I will now get off of my soapbox.

A Saturday Stroll

Gtown girl is out of shape and overweight. It was 38 degrees this morning so I put on my Red Sox hoodie and went for a walk in our park. Here are a few photos of that walk.

Sad that I'm so out of shape but praying that I will get healthier.

St Patrick's Day

Where has time gone?  I have to budget for the hubster's favorite day of the year. He wants to go the parade and then to an Irish💚 pub. No making anything at home. I've got to come up with a doable fun budget by next weekend!!

BYOB to Save Money

The "b" here stands for bag. Did you know that bringing your own bag to Target saves you money?  It's a very small amount like 5 or 10 cents but every little bit helps. Years ago Wanda Urbanska wrote a book Nothing's too Small to Make a Difference. Indeed that is true!!  The bag savings proves her point!!

Ridiculous Email

I got an email today that I think really speaks to consumerism in general.  I use Bare Minerals for my foundation.  I have Rosacea and very sensitive skin and it really does work best for my skin.  I signed up for emails because there is a Bare Minerals store at Crabtree Valley Mall and sometimes they have a good offer.  Well today's email really takes the cake.

The title of the email was:  life changing news from Lash Domination.  Really?  My life is going to CHANGE because I use their mascara?  Maybe I will like it better than others, maybe not but change my life?  Just a really silly title if you ask me.  Someone will go out and buy this item just to see if it is as good as advertised.  Now I am as guilty as the next person when it comes to succumbing to ads but this one really caught my eye.

I just want to get out of debt and live a simple sustainable life.  Somehow I don't think this mascara will help me with that!

A Simple Way to Save

To me frugality and saving money happens in the small areas of life. Those things that in and of themselves don't save much but when added together with other strategies they can make a huge difference. Calendars are just an example of a seemingly simple yet overlooked way to save. We are using a calendar from Williamsburg, VA. The photos are really pretty. We went on vacation there a couple of summers ago. We've been receiving free note cards and calendars since. Sure they ask for a donation but so far we haven't given one.   Cutting little corners here and there go a long ways to growing a savings account.

Using smaller amounts of products helps too. Do you have to use as much toothpaste?  What about aluminum foil?  Can you reuse it?  If your plastic bag didn't contain raw meat well go right ahead and wash it and reuse it.

What are some of your "small" strategies?

Sunday's Free Hockey Game

Remember when I posted that we got free tickets to 2 NHL games here in Raleigh?  Well we went to the first one on Sunday. The Hurricanes played the St Louis Blues. It was an odd day because our Captain Eric Staal got traded to the NY Rangers right before the game.  They played great in the first period but alas they lost 5-2. Talk about a bummer. At least we didn't pay to watch it😜. Here are a few pics of the day.
