Quick and Easy Pizza

This is a wonderful substitute for pizza. I don't know about you but I love pizza. I think I could eat it a few times a week.

Anyhoo we use those flatbreads. Put some pizza sauce on it and add whatever toppings you like. Bake until cheese is melted. It's quite tasty. It may not be gourmet but it works and kept me from ordering it.

Free Hockey Tickets

So after church we went to the arena to pick out our free tickets. The hubster works part time at the arena. He jokes that he gets paid to watch hockey!  Any hoo he got a voucher for four free tickets as a thank you gift this year. We are getting to see the Saint Louis Blues and the Columbus Blue Jackets. FREE!! The seats are in the first level like 6 rows from the glass. I am stoked!!  These are very pricey seats. Did I mention that they are FREE!!

Homemade Swiffer Like Cloths

You guys may already be doing this but hopefully I am sharing a bit of helpful information.

Swiffer cloths are expensive and not ecological. I've used them many times but always had a nagging thought in the back of my mind that there is a better way. I have several microfiber cloths and decided to try them. I put one on my Swiffer pole and voila it really worked!!  Probably better than the Swiffer cloth. You can just swish the cloth around with your foot if you want.

Here is a picture of a cloth before and after. Picks up great but sad my floor was this bad. I really do clean. I promise.

High End and Low End Frugality

I use a combination of higher cost and lower cost items with my beauty routine. I wash my face with Cetaphil but use a moisturizer made by Clinique. It costs $48. I follow that at night with small amount of prescription medication that one tube costs $300!!  Yikes!

My foundation is Bare Minerals but my mascara is Loreal. My tinted lip balm is very very low end. I think it cost $4.99.

I've found that all of these products work for me. I wish I could use the cheapest stuff out there but I can't.

What is your beauty routine?  Are there products you must have?

"Local" Eggs and the NC Farmers Market

I went back to the NC Farmer's Market for a dozen eggs.  I put local in quotation marks because the farm is about an hour away from the Raleigh area.  I have not been able to find local eggs around here.  I'm sure they exist but some are part of a CSA and we are not members of one.  We would have way too much waste to buy produce like that.

The price each week has been $5 a dozen and yes the yolks are quite a bit more colorful than the ones you buy in the stores.

I also bought some salsa.  The name of it is Sweet Heat and it is the most delicious salsa there is bar none.   Yummy!

Am I paying more money?  Yes but I am also supporting the farmer's in my area and statewide.  Looking forward to buying more produce from there this spring and summer!

These are old photos from the farmer's market!  Isn't it beautiful?

The Envelope System Review

The envelope system does not work for me.  I've tried it several times. My tendency is to rob Peter to pay Paul. Having cash at my fingertips is not good for me.

What type of system do you use?  Is it easy for you to stay on track?

Monday Dinner

We had steak sandwiches tonight. The picture was taken during cooking. It's really quite simple. Cut steak in small pieces. Sauté in red wine vinegar, soy sauce and Worcester sauce. Add chopped onions and red bell pepper. Then put it in a hoagie roll with pepper jack cheese and some horseradish sauce. Mmm mmm good!

Surgery on Stand By

For now.  DH is diabetic and his A1C level was not where the ortho doctor wants it.  He will be on medication (for the first time) and have his blood drawn again.  If the level has gone down enough then the surgery is back on.  This leaves us time to save more money.  Good thing because I've made some stupid calculation mistakes and could use a real kick in the back region!

Udy with a J-aka Judy!

Just curious to see if anyone out in the blogging world knows if Judy has started a new blog or if she and her family are doing okay?

I miss her and her blog!

Debit vs Credit

I made some calls today to get estimates of our costs for the hubster's surgery.   All told we will owe over 3000. I have enough in the emergency fund to pay so in not in a panic. My question is whether to use the debit vs credit card. We get points for each dollar we charge on it. Those points can be used for gift cards to various stores and restaurants. If I charge it I will then write a check to cover. What would you do?

Also look at what I got in the mail today!! A new Penzeys catalog

Homemade Lasagna for Dinner

Tonight I walked in the door to homemade lasagna. DH fixed it. The approximate cost is right at $11. Cheese being the most expensive part. This served us tonight, lunch for me tomorrow and dinner again tomorrow night. That's 5 servings. So around $2.20 a serving. Not too shabby for us as we learn how to s t r e t c h our money!!
Plus our servings are probably bigger than normal. In addition we recently went to Olive Garden where I ordered lasagna. I think it cost about the same!

Enjoy the deliciousness of this photo. You're welcome!!

Amping Up the Savings

Well it looks this surgery is a go.  We have a pre-op and post op date along with the actual day itself.  I am going to have to amp up our savings because this will take out a big chunk of our emergency fund.  Things are going to have to get tighter.  I am mostly talking to myself here because DH really doesn't spend that much.  He, like most men, will make larger purchases but very few of them while, I will fritter money away.

I think we may have to dial down paying off the Elantra as aggressively as we were.  Oh shoot, we will need to buckle down on all spending.  My goal at the beginning of this year is to pay off the Elantra and our mortgage while putting money into the emergency fund.  If we cut out all spending except for essentials this could be done but I know myself.  I am not that disciplined.  I need to grow a backbone.

Plus, dh wants to go on vacation.  I suggested a staycation but he really wants to go somewhere so at the beginning of the 2016 I started putting in $100.00 into an account.  I get paid semi monthly so that is $200.00 a month.  My plan was to save this until May or June when we go and then stop.  I was going to put those funds into the emergency fund after that.

As I've mentioned before, dh likes to go out once a week for dinner and truth be told I like it too.  We are going over the budget stuff now.  I've asked him to contact Time Warner Cable to get a better deal than the one we have now. I know, I know, pay for cable?  He is not going to give up sports.  He would not like that at all and I am not going to ask him to do that.  We can afford cable just not at the price it just went to.

I'm not worried, just trying to get our ducks in a row!

Upcoming Surgery and Medical Accounts?

The hubster will be having surgery later on this month, nothing major but it does need to be done.  I had him call his insurance company yesterday to confirm his deductible and co-insurance.  It looks like after everything is said and done that we will be responsible for up to $3400.00.  Gulp!  I'm not worried, like I would have been in the past, because we do have this in our emergency fund plus some.  But this has me thinking should we have a medical account since this is technically not an emergency but I don't want to charge it so we will take the expenses out of there to avoid debt.  Does that make sense?

Do you have a separate medical account?  If so, how much do you put in?  Enough to cover surgery or just regular expenses?

Thanks for your input!

A Frugal Gift From Kroger

Here in Gtown there aren't a lot of grocery options.  We recently got an Aldis that I like but the hubster not so much.  He said the bananas I bought from there went bad quickly.

Anyhoo I digress. There is a Kroger about a mile from our home. It's not the cleanest store in the world but it is what it is. If you have a Kroger rewards card you get better deals but one of the best perks  of my Kroger card is I save 10 cents a gallon on gas at a Shell station that I pass on my way to and from work. Sweet deal right?  I'm not going out of my way to shop for food or gas do that's a double whoop whoop!!

Here is a pic of the gas pump this morning. Not too bad. What are gas prices in your neck of the woods?

Do You Even Wonder if Anyone Listens to You?

I just have to vent just a bit here.  Really, I wonder at times, if people listen at all to what we say.  If you have cats you will understand.  Sometimes cats won't look at you but their ear will turn in the direction of the sound.  Well that is what I think happens, men won't look at us but turn their ears in our direction.  Blah blah blah.
