Long Holiday Weekend

Well the long weekend is almost over, in fact as of 5:30 it was over.  That is the time I use because it is the end of my work day.  These past 3 days went by rather quickly and kind of boring.  We basically did nothing.  We did go out to eat Friday night but the rest of the time we were pretty much home bound.  The weather has been gorgeous.  It's too bad that I am allergic to most everything that grows outside.  It makes it difficult to do much outside.  The itching is so annoying.  I sat outside for less than an hour today and I've been itching since.  AND I take antihistamines every.single.day.for years on end.

Can I let you in on a secret?  I personally like weekends in which we have nowhere to go.  DH loves to go here and there.  He acts like he is bored to tears if we don't have an activity planned for every waking moment but I enjoy staying home.  I find it relaxing and much more cost effective.  I'm not a fuddy duddy but I crave to be in my home away from the crowds.  Do you fill your weekend with activities or do you like peace and quiet?

What do You Have in Your Purse?

Seen in my pic is my wallet, hand sanitizer, small notebook, pen, inhaler, Kleenex, prescription, phone ear buds, lotion, gum, make up and a Baggie that has eye drops, glasses cleaner. Of course I carry my iPhone and my work ID card. Around 25 items.   I could go lower but it would be a bit difficult. What do you have in your purse?

I Love to Read Cozy Mysteries

It started a long time ago. I fell in love with Murder She Wrote. I wanted to be just like Jessica Fletcher. Live in a coastal Maine town while solving who done its. I started reading the books in that series and that got the ball rolling.

Here is a new series I found this past weekend:  A Spice Shop Mystery--Assault and Pepper. I will let you know if I like it!!

Sundays Coupons

If you're a couponer you should buy today's paper. It's pretty full of coupons. I haven't had a chance to check them out yet but looks promising.

Sunday Lunch

Reading CT mom reminded me I forgot to show our roast. We had carrots, potatoes and onions in it as well. It was good. We bought the roast on sale. I can't remember the price but it was an excellent deal.

Composting

Do you compost?  If the answer is yes where do you put your scraps prior to taking them to the heap outside?  Do you have a special container?  What kind?  How long do you keep the scraps inside before they start to smell?

Any information will be helpful!

Skin Care and Make UP

Back some time ago I posted about my frugal skin care and make up.  Since then there has been a bit of a change.  For some reason my facial skin is wreaking havoc.  I have rosacea but also what seems like millions of bumps.  I've gone to the dermatologist and she told me to start using Cetaphil cleanser and lotion.  I asked what type of makeup was best and she said she really couldn't say one way or the other.  I've experimented using cheap foundations like Cover Girl to more expensive like Clinique.  The best I've found for me is Bare Minerals in the Fairly Light shade.  It covers the redness and most of the bumps better than any of the others.  I know that I should probably go sparingly with the foundation but it would be very intimidating to go out in public with skin the way mine is.  I'm getting more and more self conscious about it.  I think it costs $28 a jar.  Right now it's worth it.

The Least of These

A little later on I will be going to downtown Raleigh for Matthew Ministry.  Matthew Ministry ministers to the homeless in our area.  This is the first time I will be doing this with this particular ministry.  A few years ago I volunteered with Brown Bag Ministry.  We would make sandwiches, put them in brown lunch bags along with water, fruit, granola bars and take them downtown to hand out.  I stopped doing this.  Why? I really don't know other than being lazy and putting myself first.  It's time for me to be different, to live different.  I don't know what will happen today but I know I will realize just how blessed I am and how frugality and simplicity is not a must for me but a choice.  Many others do not have a choice.

The squirrel, well I just think he is cute!

Monday Meal

We did not lay any meat out today so we had baked potatoes and Progresso Soup. Chicken Tortilla I think. It isn't gourmet but we didn't go out either.

What is Our Purpose?

What is MY purpose?  I was just over at womenlivingwell.org and watched Courtney's video and she said the purpose of her blog is to pursue holiness and to point us towards Christ.  Wow how amazing is that?!  The video is about living your priorities.  What are MY priorities?  I know that my blog is about frugality and it will remain so however my PRIORITY is the same as Courtney's and I'm quite sure that I've never pointed anyone to Christ in my posts.  For those readers who are NOT Christians, don't worry.......I'm not going to hit you upside the head with a Bible and tell you where you are wrong and how I am right.  NO Way Jose!!!  I don't have it all figured out.  I do know that I want to have more $$ so that I can be a blessing to others.  How can little old me be a blessing?  Well I can give more to my church which then in turn gives those funds to various ministries locally, nationally and internationally.  I can live out my faith-now that one is way more harder than it sounds.  I mean I don't want people to think I am some kind of Jesus freak.  What will people think?  You know what?  I've got to get over that.  I can live a life of hospitality, a life of mercy, a life that points others to Christ.  By being frugal, living and spending intentionally-all with the help of God-I can point others to Christ.  I can live an authentic life.  I can share about the hope I have.

And you know what?  Even if I don't have a lot of money to give, I still have time to give, I have talents to share and I can pray for others.  If you feel so led to do, drop me a reply to let me know of prayer needs and I will do the same for you.  We are all in this together!!

Frugal Entertaining

Spring seems to bring out the fun doesn't it?  We bring out the grills and invite friends over.  I don't know about you but that tends to make me go in panic mode.  Is my house clean?  Will they like my food?  Will what they eat cause them to into antiphalactic shock?  (misspelled I'm sure).  But most of all, how can we afford it?

I'm going to start building into my budget a little bit of $$ for this purpose.    In reality having friends over does not have to be expensive.  There are many areas in which to save.  Other than the obvious of purchasing food items when on sale we can ask our friends to bring over side dishes. There is nothing written in stone this has to be a meal worthy of Martha Stewart.  Although there is nothing wrong with that.  I simply find that way too intimidating.

When making desserts do you go all out?  Do you serve red white and blue cupcakes for the 4th?  Red brown and orange for fall?  Well...................if that is your specialty maybe you can decorate with plain colored decorating sugars.  I love the sprinkles that come in shapes like bats and ghosts (obviously for Halloween) but they are way expensive.  It is more economical to have sugars in different colors or make the frosting using food colors/pastes.

Do you use paper products?  I love the paper plates for different seasons and holidays but once again they are expensive.  If you want to use paper products buy solid color that can be used for many occasions.  Red can be used for the 4th, Memorial Day and Christmas. Plain white napkins are always in style. Or better yet...................be on the look out for inexpensive plates that can be used over and over again.  Myself..........I am looking for rectangular glass plates.  This will go with any color scheme, won't clog the landfills and I am finding them dirt cheap at thrift stores.  Do you have mason jars?  These can be really cute holding forks, knives and spoons.

This brings me to this:  use what you have.  I love the mismatched look.  If you need a punch bowl and don't have one ask a friend who does or maybe your church has one.  It never hurts to ask.  Why buy a punch bowl with the glasses if you won't use it but once in a great while?

Don't be like me and let doubts keep you from having friends over.  It's fun!

Frugal vs Cheap

Sometimes it pays to be cheap but sometimes it doesn't.  In fact, I think alot of the time it doesn't.  Now before someone goes what the what!!!!!!!!!!!Let me explain.  In 2009 I had major foot surgery.  I still have screws in my heel and will for the rest of my life unless they start coming out on their own.  I spent a lot of money and time getting better.  I could not walk for months.  A few different casts, crutches, physical therapy.  Needless to say..........good shoes are a must for me.  I simply can't buy shoes at Payless, Walmart, Target etc.................So far the best ones I've found are Clarks.  I've never tried Merrell or the other brands but Clarks works pretty good for me.  Yes they are very expensive.  A couple of times I've found some sandals at their outlet stores at good prices but my everyday shoes are always over $100.00.

I think that being frugal is way different than cheap, don't you?

Thursday Fun

We took off from work today to go to. Durham Bulls baseball game. Here are a few pics b

Saturday Spending

We have a wedding to attend.  This event is about 5 hours away so we had to get a hotel room.  The room is $89.00.  We purchased $50.00 Home Depot gift cards for our present.  To some that may seem like a small amount to others a lot.  Factor in gas and this will not be one of our cheaper weekends.

Do you budget for stuff like this?  We have not in the past because we haven't attended a wedding in I don't know how long.  Learning this lesson the hard way.  Taking funds from Peter to pay Paul.  DH will reimburse for the room so the credit card bill will be paid afterward.

Frugalicious Friday

Sometimes I take generic medication but there are some meds that I prefer the real deal. The Allegra was buy 2 get a $5 gift card back. The Starbucks was totally free with my Target Perks. Now Starbucks is not my favorite but it was free and nothing beats that!!!  I also saved 5% by using my Target Red Card and 5% by using my prescription perks discount card b
