Wal Mart Success

I was pleasantly surprised with Walmart today.  We went after the 8:00 church service this morning so it wasn't packed like sardines.  Anyhoo..............we found some good deals.  I found Cracker Barrel cheese slices for $2 per package.  At other grocery stores it is a least double that.  I admit I am a cheese snob.  I will buy generic cheese and do so quite often but my alltime fave is Cracker Barrel Sharp in the orange wrapping.  I guess it's because it is what I grew up eating.  I think it has the best flavor hands down.  I also like a cheddar from Trader Joe's.  It has a parmesan flavor to it as well.  I also bought the newest edition of the Ball Blue Book of food preservation.  I know nothing about the topic but want to learn more.  The price was better than  Hopefully I won't give us botulism!

I am so looking forward to fall this year.  How about you?   I love the colors and smells and the cooler weather.  Nothing is better than having to wear long sleeves or sweaters to feel comfortable.  Plus there is the fact that college football season begins as well.  I love fall scented candles.  I saw a candle by Yankee.  I think the scent is Apple Spice.  That sounds yummy to me!  Chili and Mexican chicken soup cooking in the crockpot.  Oh my please hurry up fall!

Attention Cream Cheese Lovers

Kroger has their brand of cream cheese on sale for a dollar. I love to use it in dips mostly. The expiration date dates are for December 2015 and January 2016. I bought 8 because that's an excellent price.

Free Score

I've mentioned several times that I can only use certain products due to allergies and asthma. I had 2 coupons for these products. Curel and Intuition razor refills. So I used those coupons to lower the price along with a 5% off card and Target gift cards. No out of pocket expense for me. Oh yeah!!

Angel Food Ministries?

I've never used this and from what I understand it is no longer in service.  I wonder if they will come back.  If a downturn does happen later on this year like so many folks are predicting then this type of ministry will come in very handy.

So if you have used this option did you like it?  How was the food?  Would you do this again?

Thanks for your input!

Peanut Butter Stock UP

So after I a post about the outrageous price of peanut butter I found out that Kroger was selling the 18 oz jar for $1.79.  I was off yesterday for a doctor appointment and went to Kroger afterwards.  I bought 6 jars.  The hubster thinks it's a bit much but I don't.  I don't want to pay $2.49 or more.   Later on in the evening I found a good deal on Black Label Bacon.  That is my alltime favorite brand but it is soooooooooo high, like $6.25 a pound.  Harris Teeter had BOGOF so I did just that.  Now maybe you can find bacon cheaper than $3.12 but like I said it is Black Label.

Have you found any great deals lately?

Sunday's Late Lunch

Oh I'm so glad we finally got to eat. I was about ready to gnaw off my arm canible  style. We had grilled chicken with green bean casserole. Oh how I love green bean casserole. It's oh so delicious. Oh and throw in some croissants and it was wonderful if I say so myself.

If You Despise Paper Towels Please Don't Read or at Least Please Don't Shoot the Messenger

We were down to our last roll.  In today's Target ad there was listed that Bounty 8 large rolls were on sale for $9.99 a package.  If you bought 2 packages you get a $5 Target gift card.  Well low and behold I had a $10.00 Target gift card in my wallet. So...................I mozied on down to Target and bought the packages for $19.98.  I used my $10 gift card so out of pocket was $9.98.  Subtract the $5 gift card I got back and now the total is $4.98.   Not bad since the 8 large rolls are really really big and will last a really long time.  Score!

My First Prepper Expo

So the hubster and I went to our first Prepper expo today. I did not know what to expect. I'd say it was a cross between doomsday Preppers and your basic homemaker canning.

The majority of the people that attended the seminars were like me:  they were there to get information.

They did speak of bug out bags and locations. To be honest I doubt most folks can afford a bug out location. We can however put together "bug out bags" for our vehicles and homes. The basic level is a 3 day bag. The scenario used today was what would you do if there was a solar flare that caused electronic outages. This would most likely affect your car. Would you have a bag or supplies in your car like water to tide you over in case you had to walk home. Now if you think this is wacky you could always pretend you're in a traffic jam due to some type of natural disaster or snowstorm. You're stuck on a road and it looks like it's going to be a long time before help arrives. Do you have anything in your car that you can use for food, water or warmth?  You don't want to run all your gas out. Extra blankets would come in handy. Also gloves, socks maybe a toboggan. Some granola bars or crackers would tide you over. Bottled water would be helpful as well. The man today recommended having smaller sizes because if you keep larger bottles it could give one the impression that you have plenty therefore you may eat or drink more than you should.

Another session was on canning. Turns out the speaker was from a blog I read.   She made canning seem not do scary. I've never canned but have been interested for some time but I've always been a bit intimidated by the subject. Very few of the attendees were canning already so it was great to be with other newbies.

Today has given me more to think about. I will say that folks there are also of the opinion that something like an economic downturn will occur sooner rather than later. Everything we can do today to prepare is one thing less to worry about. Now some of you could eat out your pantry for weeks on end and be fine. I dare say that most are like me. Not so much prepared and wishing you'd been smarter with your money years ago. There's no reason to cry over spilled milk now. Get over it and get on with it. And do something to put yourself in a better position.

Preparing for Fall and Winter

What the what you say?  Yes fall and winter is really just around the corner and we need to come up with an idea of an alternate heat source and other assundry items.

First the heat-we have gas heat which I love love love.  It is so warm and cozy.  Now here in North Carolina we don't get a lot of snow but when we do the whole place comes to a stop and sometimes that includes our electricity.  We probably get more ice than snow and it can cause all kinds of havoc.  We have a 2 story home so the upstairs stays pretty comfortable as long as the heat is off for more than a few hours.  But the downstairs, that's a whole nother story.  It gets cold quickly.

We are considering either gas logs for the fireplace or a kerosene heater.  Obviously the kerosene heater will be cheaper but I don't like the scent of those things.  Hopefully that has improved over time.  We have a set of gas logs now but they are decorative.  DUH-you have to be right in front of them to feel any heat at all.  So we will go price hunting for gas logs.

We have entryways into the kitchen, dining room and upstairs.  Not doors.  Doors would be so much easier to simply close off but................we can hang up some blankets or quilts to help hold the heat in.  We could use better windows but that is NOT in the budget.  I am thinking about getting those kits where you put plastic on the inside and heat with a blow dryer.  Have any of you tried that before?  If so, did it work?  The only bad thing with that is when we get nice weather I do like to open the windows for a short time to get some fresh air.

What do you do in the fall and winter to help heat your home better and economically?

It's Saturday Eve

I'm so glad today is Friday. I always look forward to the weekend. I know I shouldn't wish my time away but I'm being honest. If I didn't have to work I wouldn't. It's not that I'm lazy. I stress a lot.

Anyhow. My plans are to attend a Preppers expo that is happening at the NC State Fairgrounds tomorrow. I've never attended one and have no idea what to expect. Hopefully it's not quite as crazy as the shows on television. I'm going to get information not to join a militia. LOL. We live in the suburbs so there's only so much we can do.   What are your plans?

Aldi Run

Well it's not exactly a run more of an errand.  I only needed a couple of items. Aldi hazelnut spread and hot sauce. You can't be a Southerner if you don't have at least a couple of hot sauces in the cabinet!!!

I withstood Temptation

The new Vera Bradley patterns came out today. I love Vera!!  Well I've been waiting on a pattern that has a black background. Wouldn't you know it. One of the patterns is a black paisley print. So I got in my car and drove to my nearest Hallmark store. I marched in prepared to buy it but when I saw it in person I just wasn't excited. It looks much prettier online vs in person. So I saved myself $80!!  I know to some of you this isn't a big deal but to me it's a big victory.

And there are Christmas ornaments out already!!

Pasta for Dinner

Dinner tonight is not very exciting but hey it's better than going out. We had spaghetti and garlic bread.

We need some inspiration for our meals. They're getting to be boring. What do ya'll eat that's really good tasty and economical.

Wednesday Dinner

Well darn I forgot to take a picture.  Anyhoo this is what we had for dinner tonight.  An omelet made with breakfast sausage that was going to expire soon, some onions, peppers, mushrooms and of course cheese-glorious cheese.  Throw in a piece of toast and voila we have a tasty dinner.

What did you have for dinner tonight?

What in the World is Going In?

United Airlines flights were grounded due to glitches. The NYSE stopped trading due to technology glitches.  The Greek economy and their banking situation. People I think we need to pay attention to this. I'm not trying to be an alarmist but it does give me concerns.

What do you think?

What's Up With the Price of Peanut Butter

The price of peanut butter is getting ridiculous.  We are not brand particular and usually buy the Kroger label for $1.99 for 18 ounces.  Now it's $2.19 and it hasn't gone down in a few weeks.  I tell ya the next time it goes below $2.00 I will buy several.  Surely eggs are not the reason!

Pray tell!

This is What We Did Wednesday Night

Hubby saved up for it and although the original tickets were purchased via credit card that bill was paid as soon as it was charged.
