It Ain't BBQ If It Isn't NC BBQ!!!!!

Pork barbeque is king here in the great north state!!!  I can't explain how delicious it is.  People move here from all over and fall in love with it shortly thereafter.  There is a big contest of eastern style bbq vs western style.  The eastern part of NC-well that sauce has vinegar in it and the western part of NC used ketchup in theirs.  I grew up eating western style.  MMM mmm good!!!  Thick and saucy but now that I am living right outside of Raleigh, you get eastern style mostly.  And that is good as well, different but still good!!

Today we went to The Pitt-it's been on the Food Network-Ed beat Bobby Flay in one of those competitions thingys.  You get both styles of sauces there so I put both on my chopped bbq and it was heavenly!!!  There were several men and boys from USA Baseball beside of us.  I asked one of the kids where they were from and he answered San Diego!!!  So The Pit must be pretty well known!!

We had a $12 gift card so we only owed a bit over $13.  Not bad for a good lunch!!!

Don't you want to eat some yourself?  Well come on down to Raleigh and I will take you there.  Be ready to wait though because the place is packed!!

Getting Ready for Christmas?

The most wonderful time of the year is a tad shy of 4 months away.  Are you ready?  Do you buy gifts right after the previous Christmas?  Are your gifts handmade or store bought?  Do you go all out with decorations and cooking all kinds of yummy foods?  Well now is the time to get in gear. A lot of baking supplies will go on sale closer to the holidays but you can make a detailed list of everything you'll need.

I have a Christmas club account. I put a small amount away every pay period.  It really helps in budgeting.

Do you travel out of town?  Will you need a hotel room?  We go to the in laws. My parents are deceased and my brother lives in Canada.  We don't have to pay for a hotel but gas money can add up.      Dh usually makes coffee ahead of time and takes it with him and I may take a bottle of water.  So food expenses really don't add up.

Every year we talk about hosting a party but we don't.  Maybe this year we will. That will make the budget increase.

I'm looking forward to the movies on the Hallmark Channel. Feel good movies that you can get lost in for a couple of hours and imagine yourself as the lead.

Well I will go now and start my own Christmas plan. Have a great weekend!!!

Friday Food

Well it isn't gourmet but it sure tasted pretty good and we didn't go out!!

The pack of hotdogs was only $1 and the buns were also $1.  The most expensive part was the chili.  I do not like canned hot dog chili so we usually buy the kind that comes in a wrapper like breakfast sausage.   I'm sure the French fries were Kroger brand so they were most likely about $2 a bag.

Frugal Tasty Dinner

DH had this cooking on the stove when I walked in the door:

chicken, chicken stock, rice, kidney beans, cumin, peppers, onions, various spices.

It was smelling really good when I walked in and tasted pretty good too.  I added some sour cream and salsa.  That really made it!!

Consigning Items

So last year I took several purses to a consignment shop in the next town.  I got several checks from the shop so I thought I'd do the same this year.  Once again I took several purses and wallets and such to the consignment shop. Most of it is Vera Bradley stuff in what I think in good if not great condition.  I received my first check in the mail the other day.  $64.42 is not bad.  I would not have made that much if I had a yard sale as folks want the cheapest prices possible as yard sales.

I am considering putting this check to make a payment on our equity line.  You remember that A/C and furnace we had replaced a while back?  What you would you guys do?  Would you put it in savings or put towards the payment?

Walmart Savings Catcher Update

So far I've "saved" .24 cents and $5.48.  I am going to let these accumulate then I will have whatever amounts I've saved to be loaded onto an E giftcard.  You can use these E giftcards in stores etc........I'm pleased with this so far.  Do any of you have this app?

Fall is Just Around the Corner

Fall will be here in a month.  Wow.......that's pretty amazing, isn't it?  Seems like just yesterday spring started.  I love fall.  It is my favorite season.  I love having to wear long sleeves or sweaters to stay warm but not all bundled up like the middle of winter.  I love the colors, the sights, the scents, the foliage.  The food!!!!!!Stews and soups and all things pumpkin.

I need to get my ducks in a row to get ready for the cooler months of Fall.  Have the furnace inspected which should be a no brainer since it is brand new.  And also find a new source of heat for times when we lose power. In our neck of the woods, the power goes out quite easily.  We are considering a kerosene heater but I am not fond of the smell of them.

If you have oil heat............are you getting your order ready?  Are you getting your homes ready such as fixing any openings around window and door frames?  Any air that comes in will make your home that much harder to keep warm.  I refuse to freeze in my own home.  I am not one of the frugalistas that wears multiple layers of clothing and socks and gloves to sit and watch tv.  Nope, not going to do it unless the power goes out!

Are you getting your pantry ready for the hardier foods of Fall?  Are there any ingredients you can buy now, at a good price of course!!  Since college football starts next week most big box stores will start having sales on snacks and items used in tailgating such as paper plates, cups, napkins etc.........

And of course Pumpkin Spice Lattes arrive!!  Truth be told our local coffee cafĂ© serves their own version of the Pumpkin Spice Latte and I can get it all year round and it is SO MUCH BETTER than Starbucks!  Just saying!  LOL

Does your part of the country turn beautiful with all shades of red, gold, brown and orange?  Oh now I am getting ready for it start right this very minute!!

Cotton Balls and Q Tips

So dear friends do you use cotton balls and/or Q tips in your beauty routine?  In my quest to get rid of unneeded things these 2 items have popped up in my mind.  Do I really need them to either remove or apply makeup?  If I don't use them, what will I use?

I came across some facial pads on Marley's Monsters etsy shop.  I think they are supposed to take the place of cotton balls for stuff like removing makeup and such.  They are made of flannel, double thickness and washable.

So where do you fall?  Qtips or no Qtips...........that is the question!

The Dial Body Wash is upside down because I'm trying to get the utmost out of it before recycling

Walmart Savings Catcher

So I don't know if ya'll have heard about the Walmart Savings Catcher but I have and I downloaded it.  I went to Walmart the other day, uploaded the information from my receipt.  If they find any item sold at another retailer for a cheaper price, they will refund the money in the form of a e gift card.  I have no idea if I will get a refund.  It can take up to 72 hours to find out.  This could be really helpful if you shop in Walmart.

Thank You Lord

I just want to publicly thank God for his goodness and mercy.  I get down quite often when a certain situation doesn't seem to be improving.  I stress a lot over it and stressing over it really is all about not trusting Him.  I have been a worrier since pretty much childhood and it continues now.  Recently I've become acquainted with a blogger friend who is Catholic and she gave me some advice.  She told me God doesn't promise to take away these situations but He does promise to be there with us and get us through it.  She told me to offer up my sufferings for others.  I told her that was a new concept for me, a Protestant.  She said she offers up her sufferings for the salvation of others.   This has given me much to think about.  Really my problems are quite trivial compared to Christians in other parts of the world having to leave their homes with only the clothes on their backs.  Many have been killed.

Oh's off to work here in a few minutes.

Are you going through some trials?  Do you, like me sometimes, feel that God is far away and not listening?  I think during those times He is actually closest to us we just don't know it.  We really shouldn't go by our "feelings".  I've been wrong many times by my "feelings".  Continue to pour out your heart and thank Him for being there for you.  Lift up others in their trials as well.  He is there, He loves you.  He gave his only Son to die for you.  What more can we ask?

For the sake of His sorrowful passion............Have mercy on us and on the whole world.

What Can We Learn From Toledo?

Toledo, Ohio has been in the news the last few days and not for a good reason.  Evidently the water is so contaminated they've been told to NOT bother boiling it.  Now that may have changed now but at least it was like this earlier.

Why does this matter to me here in North Carolina?  Well............this can happen anywhere.  From what I've read stores are being wiped out of their bottle water supplies.  I imagine even those folks who are mortally against bottled water are having to buy it, IF they can find it.  I mean if you can't boil it you pretty much have to purchase bottle water unless you have those really big water barrel things.  I dare say the majority of us don't have those but I could be wrong.

Anyhoo this is a good but sad reminder to all of us to have our ducks in a row.  Buy bottled water before it becomes a precious commodity.  Even if you hate the idea of buying bottled water, it can come in handy in cases like Toledo, Ohio.
