Tornado in Gtown Last Night

Yep!! March 29 and we had a tornado a bit after 9.  Nothing like watching a hockey game and the warning comes across the tv.  Now here in North Carolina, tornado warnings are nothing new but March?  That's a bit too early for my taste.  Anyhoo....................they started giving the names of towns that were in the path and Gtown was there.  And today the National Weather Service verified a weak tornado hit Gtown.

Like I said, this weather needs to go away.

Frugal Fatigue?

Do you ever get tired of the frugal life?  I mean, sometimes it can be a bit daunting.  In order to have a 6 month emergency fund, we need to really watch the pennies.  Sometimes I just want to say oh forget it.......................but I don't want to be retired and scared to death because of lack of finances and wishing I had been more careful with the money that was entrusted with us.

Am I the only one?

So I Started the Long Slow Purge Today

Am off of work............I threw out so much make up, enough to stock Sephora!  Some of it was old as the hills and some I should've never bought in the first place.  I don't know what I was thinking.  This is just the very teeny tiny tip of the ice berg but it is a start!!

Where in the world do you begin?

If you want to have a kind of "homesteading" lifestyle while living in a subdivision in the burbs?  I've been reading some blogs and I love them but getting started seems like a huge undertaking.

For starters, we can't have chickens or any other animals like goats etc..............  We have a pretty small pie shaped lot so there is not a ton of room to grow veggies.

Where did you homesteaders begin?  Did you go through your home and purge all of the junk?  Did you start a garden?  Do you cook pretty much all your food from scratch?  Do you make your own cleaning products?  Do you use essential oils?  I think the list goes on and on.

So any information for the most basic of basics would be appreciated.

Target Deal

So glad this work week has come to an end.  It has been stressful in more ways than one.  So on the way home last night I had to pick up a prescription from Target when I came across this deal.  All five cost only $4.85 after using my Target Red debit card and the sale the store had.  Now maybe it's not about to compete with the extreme couponers but it's good for me.

we really like these veggies

The Last Week has really S*&@*ED

Well there is my mother in law, still in the hospital.  Transferred to a rehab unit, then transferred back to the hospital.  Then a friend from church, her husband was misdiagnosed with pancreatitis.  He actually had bloodclots in the vein going to the liver that was cutting off the blood supply.  Then my manager at work, his 18 month old daughter had a seizure this weekend and is being treated for bacterial meningitis.

When will this stuff end?  I've been praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet.  It's really beautiful.  Lord knows that these folks can surely use some extra mercy now.

I've not done anything frugal or at least worthy to report.

Lent and Ash Wednesday are just around the corner

Where is the time going?  Ash Wednesday is coming up.  I love that service.  And then Lent begins.  Do you, if you are Christian, observe Lent?  If so, do you give up something or take on something?
If you are Catholic, do you have meatless meals on Fridays?  I need some good recipes.  We are Lutheran, LCMS, and this year I would like to have meatless Fridays.

I'm not a huge lover of fish.  I do like shrimp.  Can you eat shrimp on Fridays during Lent?

Let me know what you guys do.

We sang this at church today and it just brought tears to my eyes

It's beautiful

To Clarify Previous Post Just a Wee Bit

First of all my profile states and upfront admits that I/we have been horrible with our money and just now really getting it.  I know I've messed up in the past but I am really working to correct it even though I am 52.

Now.........dh and I have different insurance policies through our respective jobs.  If either of us added the other to our plans, the premiums would skyrocket.  I don't know all of the details of his plan but my plan has a $2000 deductible and a $2000 coinsurance so basically after I pay $4000 then everything is covered.  That is pretty much what I spent last year for my back surgery.

Neither one of us have HSA's offered through our employer and I'm not so sure that is what I want anyway.  I can't really talk about what I do at work but suffice it to say that I do have a little bit of experience of dealing with HSA's and it would probably be fine for dh but I really don't think it would be as great for me.  I can't really say much more than that.

I know that hospitals offer payment plans but I was taken by surprise when I was told at my admission that they were requesting the 2 grand up front.  I used to work at this same hospital in the 1990's and at that time we would never ask for payment up front but healthcare has certainly changed since then.

I hope dh doesn't have a torn rotator cuff because of what people have said about the surgery and recuperation.  It sounds like it would be much worse than my back surgery.  I dealt with horrible back pain for about 20 years and even though there was pain for the surgery I had immediate relief from the throbbing burning sciatic pain.  That part was awesome.  I still have quite a bit of pain in the left SI joint and that concerns me.  It keeps me up a lot at nights and lord knows I don't want to have to go through any more therapy, epidural steroid injections or whatever they do to help with that.

Possible Medical Expenses that We Don't Have the $$

DH has had bad shoulder pain for a long time.  He went to see his primary care doc this past week.  He wants an Ortho to see it, he thinks it could be a rotator cuff injury that MAY require surgery.  But that's jumping the ship.  I imagine first the Ortho will order an MRI.  DH has not met his deductible, in fact I think he hasn't rung up any charges towards it at all.  I have no idea what a shoulder MRI costs but I do know what a back MRI costs since I had one in late 2012.  I think my part was $500.00.  Now we can swing the $500 but the possible surgery is another story entirely.  When I had my back surgery last April, the hospital asked for $2000.00 up front since I had not met my deductible.  I charged it since I didn't have 2 grand just sitting around.

I guess we could ask the hospital to bill us if that happens?  I know hospitals offer payment plans.  Just when the only debt we have is the house up pops this.  Wow..................

Any suggestions?
