tonight's dinner and lessons learned from Judy

Tonight we had pasta with sauce and salad. Nothing extra special but quite good. Cheaper than going out, eh? Now onto Judy. I've been reading a blogger, Judy for quite some time now. Her style is forthright, honest, funny and inspiring. She's had her share of bad things happen to her but she picks herself up and keeps on going. See her family is depending on her and she is an incredible person. Before reading her latest posts I kind of subscribed to the Dave Ramsey method of beating debt. Put all of the extra dinero you have towards your debt once you've accumulated an emergency fund of $1000.00. Well let me tell ya, $1000 doesn't go very far these days. One car repair, one test that your doctor orders or a death in the family can make that grand disappear faster than a speeding bullet. So.........she has told her readers to keep adding to the emergency fund, don't put a cap on it. Most likely you WILL NEED it and maybe sooner rather than later. I only have a mortgage and Visa bill. So while I wanted to pay off the Visa by making extra big payments for the rest of the year I now plan on putting some towards the Visa but................the rest is going to an emergency fund. Dave would probably have a stroke but oh well..............I don't know Dave from Tom's housecat and he can get over it. Dave IS really smart but this episode of Judy's has got me to thinking.........................

Tasty Tuesday?

Tonight we had a Red Barron pizza heated up in the oven. Got it on sale at Kroger. Cheaper than Little Caesar at least!!

Dinner the last 2 days

no pics but here is what we ate the last 2 days: Sunday--barbequed chicken breasts, green bean casserole and salad. Water to drink Monday--barbequed pork chops, green beans/red potatoes in light parmesan cheese sauce and salad. Kroger diet drink. All of this was cooked at home therefore no takeout. Yah!!!! I don't know, nope, I know this won't make the Food Network but if I say so myself, both meals were rather tasty. Probably due to the barbeque sauce!! I can't wait to try a new bottle I bought at the beach. It is made with apples and cinnamon. Sounds kind of weird doesn't it. But I sampled it and it was delish!!!!!!!!!

Saturday dinner

Broccoli and cheese soup(Campbells) with some shredded cheddar cheese on top (Harris Teeter brand) French fries and jalapeno poppers (can't remember the brand of these) Water for me and an adult beverage for dh Much cheaper than going out-not as tasty though!! LOL

Frugal Fun on a hot Saturday

Went to the PNC Arena to see the rookies scrimmage. These guys are trying to make the Carolina Hurricanes Hockey Club. It was very cold in the arena and it felt wonderful. Did I mention it was FREE? Oh yeah!!

Do you have more than one stream of income?

Do you have talents that can generate an income? Are you crafty? Can you repair and build items? I've been thinking of ways to make additional income in case something happens to the economy or our lives. My dh works a second job but I do not. I'm thinking of starting a home party business such as 31 Gifts. I am only thinking about it now. I need to seek God about this as I don't want to do this if it out of his will. With more and more of the unemployed's benefits being cut out entirely or decreased it's got me thinking. Thinking outside of the box. What could I do if I were faced with a similar situation? I personally can't cut grass as I am allergic but I could help around the house, I could take someone's dog for a walk. I mean there has to be ways to go about helping myself while helping others. Isn't there? If any of you has gone through a job loss and found ways to generate an income in unconventional ways please let us know how you did it.

Can green living be frugal?

When it can be so dang expensive? Do you buy organic exclusively? If so, how do you afford it? Most organic food I see in the stores is much more expensive than their counterparts. I know that some folks believe that by purchasing organic food they are keeping the doctor away. I don't know if I entirely agree with that. But keep on here............ I know some folks kind of pick and choose what to purchase green such as beef. I believe some bloggers purchase their beef from farmers directly, usually half a cow or something like that. They make sure the beef was grass fed, treated well etc.............Some like to use green cleaning products. Some make their own while others buy products such as Method, Seventh Generation. Some purchase personal care products that are greener than others. Kristen at the Frugal Girl buys soap from Third Day Naturals in various scents. She really likes them and gives such glowing reports that I ordered some myself!! I hope I like them as well. I like her version of green living. I don't feel it is extreme or way too expensive. Kind of a middle of the road green living. In fact, she buys a lot of her groceries at Aldis. So she is not spending loads at Whole Paycheck, oops I mean Whole Foods. LOL Do you have a green living philosophy? Why or why not? I personally have a varied green living. I will be incorporating green more into my life.

Saving vs Spending? What do you think?

I have a personal finance book that says that saving is backwards and spending is where it's at. Meaning that if we control our spending we will have more to save. One of the authors said they tried to put a certain amount aside each month. They waited for it to accumulate and it didn't. Once they controlled their spending, they saw this amount get higher and higher. Much higher than they anticipated. The couple live in Iowa. They do not make high salaries. They do not live in a fancy home or drive fancy cars. The book was written several years ago but I think the advice is still timely. So where are you on this spectrum? Savings vs it one vs the other or both? Weigh in with your vote!!

I love reading cozy murder mysteries

and I've decided to make it a feature on my blog. I buy loads of books, yes I know not very frugal. I also check out loads of books. The newest book I have is pictured. I'll let you know if I like it or not. Deep down I wish I were Jessica Fletcher!!

Frugal Fridays

So today is the last Friday of my vacation. How did I spend it? I took several purses to a consignment store in Fuquay Varina. My Back Porch. I hope they sell. Most of these purses were Vera Bradley, like the one in this photo. a couple were Fossil and one was Tiagnello and a Coach. The store will most certainly sell these for much more than what I could sell them for via garage sell. Maybe I could get more via Craig's List but I am leery of that. So.........wish me well. I want to use the money earned, if there is any, to help pay off my Visa card and also save.

Back from our vacation

Some folks in the frugal living world, those who are paying off debt say take no vacations or do a staycation. Well........we didn't do that. We went to the beach for 3 nights. I saved up the money the last several months to pay for it. It was worth it, although extremely hot. My dh works 2 jobs and he deserved it and I needed to get away from the job. We are required to take 5 days off in a row where I work. Here are just a few pics from our time, nothing outstanding just fun and/or interesting.

2 more days to work this week

then it's vacation time. Yay!!!!! I'm also going to start slowly adding prepping supplies. I want to buy some propane tanks and a few other items to begin my emergency box. I've got to get my family better prepared financially and ready if disasters occur. The problem is me, I've got to tow the line. I need all the advice you guys out there can give me.

I started Prepping today in a very small way

I bought Survival Mom's book several months back and promptly put it up. I got it down this weekend and started picking and choosing the chapters again. There is a list in the back of various supplies that she suggests one have on hand in case of power outages. is my small step and I bought a pack of paper plates. Yep, paper plates. I know a lot of you guys don't use paper products like plates, napkins, utensils but in time of need we should save our water for consumption and sanitation purposes not washing dishes. I plan on buying some more supplies such as propane tanks for our Coleman stove and small gas grill, oil lamps, candles, food that doesn't need to be heated etc..........I will keep you guys informed of my progress.

Are you a Prepper?

I don't mean someone who hoards bullets and AK47's but someone who is concerned with the economy and how their family would fare if it took another downturn. I read a lot of frugal living blogs. I especially like and the Frugalupstate seems to concentrate her efforts on obviously frugal, sustainable living while the survivalmom warns and gives tips on how to prepare for not only economic downturns but also natural disasters and the like. I've gone for so long just going along life without much planning at all and BAM here I am, 51, and not prepared for financial or natural disasters. So I am going to learn more about it, preparing that is, and do what I can and hopefully share what I've learned here. I hope you readers will learn something too. Hold on tight because this could be a bumpy ride.

Christmas Spending Plan

Yes I know the 4th hasn't ended yet!! Don't turn the page yet. We all know that Christmas is just a tad bit more than 5 months away. Really just around the corner. Do you put money away each month or just hope there will be enough available in December? Does your plan include all of the extra expenses such as food for those yummy treats you will be making? The wrapping paper, bows etc............? Gas money for the extra traveling or maybe even airplane tickets? I have been putting a little bit away each payday. I am on a semi monthly schedule. At the end of October that money will be transferred to an account for me to use. I put $30 from every check into this account. Maybe that doesn't sound like much but it is better than nothing and I still think it allows us to have a nice wonderful Christmas. So what do you do? photo by
